Elder Abuse Awareness Walk

Each year we support and participate in the Piedmont Triad′s World Elder Abuse Awareness Day Walk sponsored by the Piedmont Triad Regional Council Area Agency on Aging. This walk helps to bring attention to the fact that:

  • one elderly person is victimized every 2.7 minutes
  • more than one in ten older adults may experience some type of abuse, but less than 20% of cases are reported

This means that many seniors who have been abused do not get the help they need. Unfortunately, their suffering is often in silence. Elder abuse can happen to any older individual – your neighbor, your loved one - it can even happen to you! The Annual Elder Abuse Awareness Walk brings attention and support to elder abuse and our work to put an end to it. Healthcare Industry Professionals Serving Seniors (HIPSS) PRN Task Force

Dr. Henry Tripp of Physicians Home Visits and other area advocates for seniors put together a task force to educate patients and caregivers to the dangers of using psychotropic drugs in the elderly population with dementia. These drugs are associated with increased mortality and complications. The Psychotropic Drug Reduction Now (PRN) Task Force will advocate the reduction of the use of these drugs, teaching behavioral methods to deal with dementia, beginning in assisted living facilities in our community.
